São Jorge Castle

The current name derives from the devotion of the castle to Saint George, patron saint of knights and crusaders, made by order of D. John I in the fourteenth century. Over time the castle, as well as the various military structures of Lisbon, was being renovated, to the point that in the first half of the twentieth century it was already in an advanced state of ruin.
